Places to go
Hunter Valley
It’s one of the country’s pre-eminent wine destinations, and no Hunter Valley break would be complete without experiencing its offerings at cellar doors where the architecture almost outshines the wine (but not quite). You’ll soon find the Hunter is an equally alluring food destination, too, and is brimming with outstanding accommodation options, from luxe digs to grand manors dotted among the vineyards. Every one of your senses will be sated.
Tips
- Alongside wine, the Hunter Valley is known for its artisanal cheese and chocolate. Visit local shops or specialty stores to sample and purchase these delicious treats.
- Explore the countryside on a cycling tour. Many companies offer bike rentals, and you can pedal your way through vineyards and scenic routes.
- Consider staying in a vineyard lodge or boutique accommodation for an immersive experience. Wake up surrounded by vineyards and picturesque landscapes.
- Experience the Hunter Valley from above by taking a hot air balloon ride. This provides breathtaking views of the vineyards and surrounding landscapes, especially during sunrise.
Upper Hunter
The verdant rolling hills of the Upper Hunter are horse country, and you won’t want to leave this quiet, peaceful patch without settling into a saddle and meandering the luscious landscapes. There’s wine here, too, and great food experiences, and the region is bordered by World Heritage wilderness and mountains – where it’s very easy to leave the world behind. Explore the local delights on one of the scenic drives through this beautiful area. Begin your journey at Muswellbrook, where you can explore the extensive collection of influential Australian artists in the Max Watters Collection at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre. The cellar doors around Denman and Sandy Hollow are a short drive away.
Tips
- The Upper Hunter is home to several national parks and nature reserves. Explore Barrington Tops National Park, Wollemi National Park, and other natural areas for hiking, bird watching, and scenic landscapes.
- Consider taking a guided tour of the many horse studs in the region. Some properties offer tours where you can see champion racehorses and learn about the breeding process.
- Explore the historic towns of Murrurundi, Aberdeen, and Merriwa. Wander through charming streets, visit local museums, and discover the unique history of each town.
Barrington Tops
Spend a day in the ancient rainforests of Barrington Tops National Park and you’ll feel the world melt away. Choose your own path here – find a perch to meditate by a running river, bushwalk into the mystic for hours, or find a different kind of rhythm in a kayak. When the sun begins to set, the towns of Dungog and Gloucester will welcome you with open arms.
Tips
- Some parts of Barrington Tops can be remote, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for gravel roads and carry essentials like a spare tire, first aid kit, and extra fuel.
- In winter, Barrington Tops can experience snowfall, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland. Check road conditions and be prepared for the possibility of snow if traveling during this season.
- If you plan to camp within Barrington Tops National Park, consider making reservations in advance, especially during peak seasons. There are various campgrounds, each offering a unique experience.
