Mon Repos

Mon Repos, a 20-minute drive from the centre of Bundaberg, hosts the largest loggerhead turtle rookery in the Southern Hemisphere which plays an important role in turtle conservation. Every year from November to March, the beaches transform as hundreds of turtles return home while thousands more take their very first hurried steps. It’s a place where the sound of awe combines with the subtle breaking of waves.

Lady Elliot & Lady Musgrave islands

Off the coast, Lady Elliot Island’s caretaker Peter Gash has led the island’s recovery, resurrecting an over-mined, desolate speck to a 100% sustainable eco-resort that’s a refuge for wildlife and travellers alike. The Southern Great Barrier Reef continues slightly further north at Lady Musgrave Island and is best explored via Lady Musgrave Experience. These two coral cays are home to more than 1,200 different species, including significant seabird populations, nesting turtles, manta rays and of course, corals.

  • Mention the Bundaberg Barrel, a quirky attraction where visitors can learn about the town’s history through interactive exhibits and enjoy tastings of local beverages.
  • Bundaberg has a subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is the dry season (April – November).
  • Snorkelling and diving tours at Lady Musgrave Island and the Southern Great Barrier Reef are a must do when visiting Bundaberg.
